Cafe nailbomb suspect Nicky Reilly turned to radical Islam af ter enduring years of cruel "gay" jibes.
He was dubbed "Queenie" by other teens on the estate where he grew up.
Bullies also mocked 22-year-old Reilly - 6ft 3ins and 18 stone - over his weight.
The constant taunts drove him to seek friends among Iraqi Kurds who met in a shop and restaurant near his home.
Anti-terror police were last night hunting a Mr Big who they believe was behind Reilly's new "pals" and convinced him to blow himself up in a crowded shopping area.
Reilly, who has suffered from mental problems and a form of autism, was left with severe cuts and bruises when the bomb he was carrying went off in the Giraffe family restaurant in Exeter, Devon, last Thursday.
